THE BRIEF

The clients wished to transform a small, enclosed garden into a calm and practical outdoor space that could be used for both everyday living and relaxed entertaining. The garden needed to feel structured yet soft, with a clear sense of flow between the house and the seating areas. Privacy, year-round interest, and the integration of a barbecue and water feature were key priorities within the limited footprint of the site.

DESIGN RESPONSE

The design introduces a simple, ordered layout that maximises usable space while maintaining a strong connection to planting. Porcelain paving provides a clean, durable surface that reflects light back into the garden, helping the space feel brighter and more open.

A series of shallow steps define subtle level changes and guide movement through the garden, while retaining existing trees and incorporating new layered planting to soften the hardscape. A living wall has been introduced along the brick boundary to add vertical greenery, improving enclosure and visual depth without sacrificing space.

A bespoke water feature brings sound and movement into the centre of the garden, creating a sense of calm and helping to mask surrounding noise. Materials and detailing are kept restrained, allowing planting to provide seasonal change and texture. Together, these elements create a compact garden that feels generous, balanced, and designed for daily use rather than occasional display.

Tasked with rejuvenating a lifeless courtyard space, our challenge was to introduce vibrancy and natural allure into a compact urban garden.
