THE BRIEF
Following a major renovation and kitchen extension, the garden behind this period home in Leamington Spa had been left compacted and unresolved. It functioned only as a route between doors, with no sense of comfort, flow, or identity.
The clients wanted a garden that felt calm and structured — a space suitable for entertaining and everyday living, while respecting the character of the house. They were looking for something restrained and elegant rather than decorative or overly formal, with materials and planting that would mature naturally over time.
THE DESIGN RESPONSE
The design establishes a clear relationship between house and garden by using pale limestone paving to reflect light back into the kitchen and living spaces. The terrace is aligned carefully with the architecture, creating a natural extension of the interior rather than a separate outdoor zone.
Reclaimed brick walls introduce warmth and texture, forming subtle level changes and informal seating while echoing the historic fabric of the house. A clay paver path follows the line of the boundary wall, gently guiding movement through the garden and reinforcing its long, linear form.
Planting is layered and composed to soften the structure without obscuring it. Four Amelanchier trees frame the lawn and bring seasonal interest, while a mix of perennials, bulbs, and evergreen planting provides texture and continuity throughout the year.
Existing mature trees — including a significant oak and a prized magnolia — were retained and carefully protected, allowing the new garden to sit naturally within its setting from the outset.
The result is a light-filled, composed garden that balances structure with softness — equally suited to relaxed family life or quiet evenings of entertaining.
CLIENT TESTIMONIAL
“We knew we wanted our garden to feel like an extension of the kitchen — another living space — but with tricky levels and limited space, we couldn’t imagine it being both functional and beautiful.
Meeting Tom while he worked next door gave us confidence — his attitude, style, and the quality of his work spoke for themselves. From the outset, he grasped our vision and elevated it, delivering a lush, spacious garden we never thought possible.
Tom and his team were professional, tidy, and respectful throughout. I rarely recommend people, but Tom Wolstenholme is a true exception. Our garden is living proof of his ability.”
